How To: Extend the Life of Your Furnace

How To: Extend the Life of Your Furnace

Western Pennsylvanian winters can get pretty rough, especially when the temperature drops to arctic levels of cold. Needless to say, winter is not the time you want to worry about your furnace acting up. Luckily, there are many things you can do year round to help keep your furnace healthy, and save you from making costly repairs. Here are a few things you can do to extend the life of your furnace.

1. Replace your filter as soon as it’s dirty

This is the easiest thing you can do to extend the life of your unit. If your filter is dirty, replace it asap. A dirty filter prevents proper airflow throughout your house, which means your furnace will have to work harder to keep your house warm. In the summer, your air conditioner uses the same air filter to blow clean air through your house, so it’s best to do this year round.

2. Seal ductwork

Holes in your ductwork can let a lot of air escape to places you don’t want it, such as your attic or basement. Improperly installed ductwork can leave gaping holes which allow air to escape, so make sure you have a professional install any ductwork in your house. Old duct work can also have leaks. Over time, the air ducts in your house can expand and contract, causing ductwork to literally come apart at the seams.

3. Get a Programmable Thermostat

Upgrading to a programmable thermostat can not only increase the life of your furnace, but it can save you a ton in heating costs. A programmable thermostat can automatically lower the temperature in your home when you don’t need it, which can give your furnace a much needed rest.

4. Schedule regular maintenance

It’s easy to neglect this step, but regular maintenance on your unit is the best thing you can do to make sure you get the most out of your furnace. Proper maintenance can find problems before they happen, and keep you from paying for emergency repairs. It will also keep your furnace running as efficient as possible, which will instantly save you money on your heating bills.
